House of the Ages

King Ondor watched the remnants of the sun slip from the horizon, cast an adoring look out over the city and turned from the balcony back to his chambers.

‘Hoom.’ His golden eyebrows tightened.

The brackets were extinguished, dousing the chamber in darkness. At the other side, amethyst light filtered through drawn silk drapes. He reached into his robes and drew a knife.

The hunter was stood at the opposite window, arms folded, looking out on the city. The muzzle of his wolf’s cloak nuzzled up against the nape of his neck, its hind claws scraping the ground. He made a dark silhouette against the fading straits of light.

Knife still drawn, Ondor stepped into the middle of the room. ‘To whom do I owe the pleasure?’

The hunter spoke without turning. ‘You didn’t tell him.’

‘I told him what he needed to know for the next part of his journey.’

‘Yes, you did that.’ The hunter fingered the fabric of the drapes. He turned to face Ondor, beard and fierce eyes momentarily lit by the amethyst light before eclipsing back into darkness. ‘But you didn’t tell him everything. You said once you believed my predictions about what’s coming, so why waste his time?’

‘I know few men who can converse with nature, strike fear into the hearts of T’Choruck captains and even command kings. Only you.’ Ondor sheathed his knife. ‘Very well, Tempest, I shall tell him.’

The hunter, Tempest, nodded and turned to leave. Ondor stepped closer, his hazel-gold eyes straying into columns of waning light.

‘Where will you go?’

‘Oh I’ll be around. When you need me, just call.’
